Bird Flu Outbreak in Nagpur confirmed at Seminary Hills hatchery as authorities declare infected zone, order culling, and impose restrictions to contain H5N1 spread.
Authorities have declared a bird flu outbreak at the Central Poultry Hatchery in Seminary Hills, Nagpur, after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Immediate containment measures have been put in place to prevent further spread.
Infected and Surveillance Zones Announced
Officials have marked a 1-kilometre radius around the hatchery as an infected zone, where strict containment actions are underway. In addition, a 9-kilometre surrounding area has been designated as a surveillance zone, where heightened monitoring and preventive steps are being enforced.
Culling and Movement Restrictions Imposed
As part of standard disease control protocol, authorities have ordered the culling of all poultry birds within the infected zone. Eggs and poultry feed in the area will also be safely disposed of to eliminate potential sources of infection.
A complete ban on the sale, transport, purchase, and exhibition of poultry has been imposed within the infected zone. The area will undergo intensive sanitisation for 21 days, in line with national disease containment guidelines.
Precautionary Measures in Surveillance Zone
In the wider surveillance zone, poultry shops and bird markets have been directed to remain closed temporarily. Officials say this step is precautionary and aimed at minimising human and animal contact that could facilitate the spread of the virus.
Coordination Between Agencies
Multiple government departments, including the municipal corporation, animal husbandry department, and veterinary services, have been mobilised. Teams have been instructed to strictly follow biosecurity protocols, monitor poultry health, and respond swiftly to any suspected cases.
An official involved in the response said the coordinated approach is critical to containing the outbreak quickly and preventing escalation.
What is H5N1 and Why It Matters
H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects birds but can occasionally infect humans through close contact with infected animals. While human infections are rare, outbreaks can have significant economic impact on poultry farming and supply chains.
Public Impact and Advisory
Residents in and around the affected areas may face temporary disruptions in poultry supply due to restrictions. Authorities have urged the public to avoid handling sick or dead birds and report unusual poultry deaths to local officials.
Consumers have also been advised that properly cooked poultry products remain safe to eat, as the virus does not survive high cooking temperatures.
Next Steps
The situation will be closely monitored over the coming weeks. Authorities will review restrictions after the 21-day sanitisation and observation period, depending on whether new cases emerge.
Officials have emphasised that early detection and strict containment are key to preventing a wider outbreak.
